Located in Osceola County in Central Florida, Kissimmee was a trading post named Allentown. It was said the that the land purchased here saved the state of Florida from financial disaster. The purchase of the land drained the swamp and deepened the Kissimmee River, to open a trade route from Allentown to the Gulf of Mexico. The area became prosperous producing cattle and sugar cane. On March 24, 1883, the area incorporated into a city, and it was renamed Kissimmee. The estimated population is now well in excess of 2,000,000.
