Indians were believed to have inhabited the shores of Lake Apopka as early as 7500 B.C., and until about the 1st century A.D. It then appears that they disappeared until about 400 years later. When the Spainish arrived in the 16th century, the Acuera tribe of the Timucua indians lived here, but, by around 1730, they were decimated by disease and war, brought by the Europeans.  Then, again, in the 19th century, the indians returned. This time it was the Seminoles, who lived here in until the 2nd Seminole War in the mid 1830s. White settlers came in the Armed Occupation Act of 1842, receiving 160 acres, if they would settle them. The town incorporated in 1882. Today it's known as "The indoor foliage capital of the world."
