Florida's homestead exemption allows homeowners to reduce by $25,000 the value on which property taxes are levied. You qualify if you are a permanent Florida resident and you bought and occupied your house by January 1. The average savings to the homeowner is approximately $500 per year.Registrations for the exemption are accepted throughout Central Florida through March 3. If you are a new homeowner who meets the qualifications, you need to register. If you've lived in your home a while and have registered, there's no need to renew the exemption. In most counties, you will need to register in person. Orange, Seminole, and Brevard Counties allow you to register by mail. Orange, Seminole, Brevard, and Volusia Counties offer application forms that can be printed from their web sites.
